How to bid on a Brighton tax sale
Most Ontario tax sales are sealed tenders with one chance to bid. There is no second round.
- Get the tender form (Form 7) from the Municipality of Brighton or the Government of Ontario's forms site.
- Bid at least the minimum tender amount, and attach a deposit of at least 20 percent of your bid by money order, bank draft or certified cheque made out to the Municipality of Brighton.
- Seal it in an envelope addressed to the treasurer, marked as a tax sale and naming the property. It must reach the office by the deadline on closing day, which the rules set at 3:00 p.m. local time.
- The highest valid bid wins. The winner has 14 days from the day the treasurer's notice is mailed to pay the balance, land transfer tax and any taxes that have built up since.
You cannot go onto the property first, someone may be living there, and a sale can be cancelled right up to the end. Read how Ontario tax sales work before you bid.
Brighton tax sale questions
Is there a Brighton tax sale right now?
Yes. Brighton has 1 property open for bids, and bids close on Wednesday, November 18, 2026.
How often does Brighton hold tax sales?
There is no fixed schedule. A sale can follow once taxes on a property have gone unpaid long enough and a one-year redemption period has run out. We have 1 closed sale from Brighton on record since 2018, covering 1 property.
Where are Brighton tax sales advertised?
Every Ontario tax sale must be advertised once in the Ontario Gazette and once a week for four weeks in a local newspaper. Where there is no suitable newspaper, the notice is posted at the municipal office and one other prominent place instead.
What is the minimum bid at a Brighton tax sale?
The minimum is the cancellation price: the unpaid taxes plus penalties, interest and the municipality's costs. It has nothing to do with what the land is worth. At past Brighton sales, minimum bids have run from $17,489 to $17,489.
